Santa’s Little Helper
It’s quite a funny thing, that shape a northern hemisphere foreigner pulls their face when you tell them that it is mid summer in Africa on Christmas Day! I think part of the face-pulling is because they do know we having summer while they were having winter, but they just can’t imagine Christmas without the cold, the snow, the eggnog, hot Christmas pudding, hand-knitted matching jerseys or seeing Christmas lights through steamed up windows. What they don’t know is that we have invented own traditions, lots are still the same like the hot Christmas pudding and roast turkey with gammon but we have also added our own little twists to accommodate the great summer weather.
First of all, Christmas time falls in our summer holidays so most people are already relaxed after 10 days of holidays, in fact – loads of people spend Christmas on their actual vacation on the beach or in the bush. One of my most unique Christmas memories was on a game farm in Sabi Sands and we had Christmas celebrations in the middle of the bush and the ladies sang carols (or more like African carols) in various African languages. We all had a Braai (barbeque) while the rangers were on the look-out for dangerous animals! A rare experience.
Talking about Braai which is another difference in our summer – we have loads of braais! These can also happen on Christmas day surrounded by your family in the sunshine, swimming, maybe having a beer – now isn’t that just what a special occasion should be about. South Africans have also been know to serve their turkey and gammon cold or with accompaniments like fruit and chilled wine. It is all very social and is about bringing many families together or inviting friends whose family live far or are on holiday. We still eat Christmas cake with custard and hand-baked festive shortbread for dessert. Maybe some ice cream thrown in there would never be a bad idea!
One thing that is still based on northern tradition is the Christmas tree, except most of ours are fake. We don’t have a huge abundance of water which makes it expensive to cultivate exotic trees so we just use fake ones inside. We decorate them with tinsel and snow filled ornaments and some people even use hand beaded African decorations like stars, angels balls or even Santa. You can buy on the street corner or at a robot (traffic light) from the wire man (or online in South Africa or in the US, they even make actual Christmas trees from wire and beads which can look really beautiful. Another tree that has been introduced in the last couple of years is a live African Acacia thorn tree which has a mass of thorns near the top of a tree to create a canopy and you hang your decorations from the thorns.
In celebration of our South African Christmas, 2give Unique Hampers have introduced An African Christmas Basket, which is a handmade rustic basket filled with real South African treats like biltong, Ouma rusks, Rooibos tea, Nandos peri peri sauce and Mrs Balls chutney. It also contains one of those handmade beaded Christmas decorations and some Christmas crackers for that festive table! Wrapped in beautiful gold Christmas tissue paper, cellophane and gold ribbon.
We also have a selection of 5 other Christmas Hampers like (although we can wrap any hamper in Christmas wrapping):
– Santa’s Little Helper: A children’s Christmas gift hamper with little treasures to put a festive smile on their faces, even “Paint your own decoration” set.

South Africa is called the as we are a mixture of types of people and that includes all types of religions. There are many people in South Africa who don’t celebrate Christmas but there are some special things about Christmas time in South Africa – it is hot, people are on holiday so they are relaxed and we all love to spend long days surrounded by family and so happy to be in such a special place that has a very unique Christmas. One that is a mixture of traditional and new, one is that all our own – a real South African Christmas! If you wish to use this article on your website, please do not change it is any way and make sure you keep the links in it active.
